AHS CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEYOR GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE

AUSTRALASIAN HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEYORS CERTIFICATION PANEL 

The Australasian Hydrographic Society (AHS) invites nominations from suitably qualified and experienced members of the hydrographic community for appointment to two important bodies that will help shape the future of the profession and support the continued development of hydrographic capability.

1. AHS Certified Professional Hydrographic Surveyor Governance Committee – 6 Positions

The Certified Professional Hydrographic Surveyor Governance Committee is a newly-established permanent committee reporting to the AHS Council representing the needs of the Australasian Hydrographic Society Certification Panel (AHSCP), Certified Professional Hydrographic Surveyor (CPHS) Professional Members of the Society, and the Society’s New Zealand based partner Survey and Spatial New Zealand (S+SNZ). 

The purpose of the Committee is to ensure the proper and effective governance of the AHSCP certification scheme and of matters of hydrographic professionalism of AHSCP Certified Professional Hydrographic Surveyors (Level 1 and Level 2).  

Six Committee Member positions are available for election, which includes:

• five positions for current Certified Professional Hydrographic Surveyors (CPHS 1 or CPHS 2)
• one Emerging Professional position for an individual who has yet to achieve CPHS certification.

We are seeking candidates who are committed to strengthening the profession and who can contribute a broad range of experience, perspectives and professional expertise.

The Committee will also comprise seven appointed positions representing key stakeholder groups (refer to Terms of Reference).

2. Australasian Hydrographic Surveyors Certification Panel (AHSCP) expert Panel – 3 Positions

The role of the AHSCP Panel is to undertake technical and professional assessment of applications for AHSCP Certification; review qualifications for Skilled Migration (Hydrography) applications; and to review the AHSCP Guidelines on certification as required. The AHSCP Panel comprises the ex-officio Chair, the Hydrographer of Australia and five elected members. The Panel meets four times per year – three VTC and one face-to-face meeting in June (expenses borne by AHS). In 2026, the following positions are up for election:

• Education Representative
• Industrial Offshore Surveying Representative
• Nautical Charting Hydrography Representative

The Panel requires experienced practitioners who can contribute specialist knowledge, sound professional judgement and a commitment to maintaining high standards across the hydrographic profession. Refer to the Position Descriptions for more details.
